Augmented reality has exploded as an area of digital technology research. One needs to look no further than events like E3 and Mobile World Congress to see its popularity.
South By Southwest 2016 is no different in that regard. That’s because out of over 6,000 entries on its PanelPicker, several dozen focus or at least touch on augmented reality. One of these sessions aims to take augmented reality out of the lab and into your hands.
People are excited about the potential of AR to make their jobs easier. We often see augmented reality being used to do things like help market a blockbuster movie, but someone can use it for so much more.
How can augmented reality help your team accomplish tasks with even better results? What are the obstacles to moving to truly production-ready AR? New options for using wearable technology and improved optics on smartphones and tablet devices are emerging every day, and it’s time we design new ways in which to interact with our environments.
We’ve proposed a panel for SXSW 2016 with a diverse selection of experts discussing how we address these challenges by developing augmented reality solutions that are useful, usable and substantial. This panel includes:
- Chad Udell, Float’s managing director, is the author of two books and brings the perspective of being part of a small business that focuses on research and development of enterprise applications.
- As part of the United States government, Erin Gibbens works with a variety of mission-critical agencies. Her work output affects the life and death of her target audience.
- Geoff Stead is the senior director of mobile learning at Qualcomm, a technology leader in the mobility industry.

Panels for this event in Austin, Texas, are chosen partially by popular vote. You will need an account to vote. Voting closes Friday, Sept. 4, at 11:59 p.m. Central. They will announce proposals the week of Oct. 19, so we’ll keep you posted of any additional updates for this panel.
